Spanish women’s tennis star Garbine Muguruza was put in a pickle as she recently went to attend the 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid. The 30-year-old, who recently announced her retirement from professional tennis, was body-shamed over gained weight by a few journalists.

The Spanish ace was reminded of how people are talking about her going out of shape as a journalist mentioned the comments on social media. They claimed that people could tell that Muguruza had stopped training.

[People] were saying they can tell you’ve stopped training, especially on social media. People were attacking you harshly because of the shape you are in…

a journalist said to Garbine Muguruza during the Laureus World Sports Awards.

As ridiculous as this statement was, Muguruza not only kept her calm and laughed it out, but also dished out a strong response. She said that it is a result of her not training. Muguruza then highlighted the importance of living and enjoying life rather than trying to maintain the physique of an Olympic athlete.

Well, if I don’t train what’s going to happen? I want to live life, enjoy life. A training regimen is extremely hard, so when you can live life more and relax, you want to enjoy it. The physique of an Olympic athlete, we all know…Let’s be clear - the important thing is to stay healthy and enjoy life.

Garbine Muguruza wants to do nothing after retiring from tennis

The Spanish tennis ace who was once ranked No. 1 in the world decided to call it quits last weekend. The 30-year-old stunned tennis fans as she decided against continuing tennis any further. Even when asked about her future plans, Garbine Muguruza said that she wanted to do nothing.

She played down the narrative where people expect great answers from players who decided to walk away from the sport. Muguruza said that while others talk about starting their own business, she is focused on spending time with loved ones and going on trips without her tennis racket.

People expect a great answer from me, I’m leaving tennis because I’m going to do this or that, I’m going to go into business, I’m going to develop a cookie – whatever it is. No. I’m leaving tennis because I’m looking forward to being with my loved ones, making a trip without my tennis racquets, probably building a family, getting a dog. I just want to do nothing.

Notably, Murguruza turned pro in 2012, and only four years later, she won her maiden Grand Slam title. She then went on to become the first player ever to beat Serena Williams and Venus Williams in Grand Slam finals on her way to winning 15 tour-level tournaments, including the WTA Finals in 2021.

However, the Spaniard took an extended break from the sport before she eventually decided to call it quits. Muguruza is now focused on living her life to the fullest and also starting a family.
