In his Instagram post, the former World No. 8 had left a long note thanking the sport, his family, and coaches as he revealed this shocking information. The note written in Spanish explained his reason for considering retirement.

I want my last tournaments to be my own decision. Let this 2024 be that way, hopefully getting the opportunity to compete in the tournaments I enjoy the most. And in 2025, in Argentina, to be able to have my final moment, the most beautiful closure I can imagine.

Despite his turbulent form this year, the Argentine has always been an underdog in the sport. He was an underrated clay court specialist, considered a major danger on this surface along with Rafael Nadal. His best run came in 2020 when he made it to the French Open semifinals before losing to Nadal.

Since then, he has only played in his favorite tournaments and even wants to end his career in one of them, understandably. He joins Rafael Nadal as one of the players to close a chapter in their professional life at the end of 2024.

Currently, the 31-year-old does not even have a single tour-level win this year. Despite winning in the qualifiers, the Argentine has not won any games on the main circuit, tampering with his happiness on the court, and ultimately leading to the retirement decision.

Schwartzman will still run through 2024 and will play his next match at the Rome Open qualifiers. After a failed run in Madrid, the Argentine will try his luck in Italy and hope to get his first tour-level win this season.
