Sinner Keeps No. 1 Spot, Nadal Inches Closer On Top 100 Return In Latest Rankings

Jannik Sinner has retained the World No. 1 ranking before the Olympic Games begins and will do so for the next few weeks.

There were four ATP Tour-level tournaments in which some Top 10 players participated to try and seek momentum before heading to Paris. The biggest of them was the Hamburg Open, where top seed Alexander Zverev reached the final for the second year in a row.

But the German could not defend his title and lost to French youngster Arthur Fils. That means Zverev only partially bridged the gap on Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, who belong in the top three.

Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev both played in Bastad but underperformed. The Nowergian rises above the Russian into the eighth spot courtesy of losing fewer points during the week.

Fils makes his Top 20 debut after stunning an ill-tempered Zverev in his home city. The 20-year-old won his first ATP 500 title and climbed eight places to 20th. Zhizhen Zhang’s quarterfinal in Hamburg takes him to a new career-high ranking of 31st.

Adrian Mannarino fell seven places to 32nd. He surrendered his title in Newport in the round of 16. Marcos Giron is the latest 30-year-old to win a maiden ATP title.

He defeated fellow American Alex Michelsen in the last grass-court tournament of the ATP calendar to rise to a best ranking of 38. He wasn’t the only first-time winner at the weekend.

Portugal’s Nuno Borges shocked 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in the Bastad Open final. The 27-year-old soars nine spots to a career-high of No. 42 for winning his first Tour-level title.

Who Are the Other Big Movers In This Week’s ATP Rankings

Matteo Berrettini is back in the Top 50 of the ATP rankings. The Italian won his second Gstaad Open title in his third visit. He only dropped his serve once during the week and vaulted 22 places to 50th. This is also his second title of the season (he also won on the clay of Marrakech).

Speaking of Nadal, who fell just short of clinching his first ATP title since the 2022 Roland Garos, he leaves Bastad having made considerable moves in the rankings. The Spaniard rose 100 places to 161st. It’s his best ranking since returning from hip surgery earlier in January.

France’s Quentin Halys was ranked outside the Top 200 just a few months back. But a run to the Gstaad final as a qualifier has bumped his place in the standings by 67 spots (up to 125th).

23-year-old Croat Duje Ajdukovic rose to a new best ranking of No. 110. He reached his first ATP semifinal in Bastad as a qualifier and nearly defeated 14-time Roland Garros champion, Nadal.

China’s Yunchaokete Bu, 22, won the Granby Challenger and broke into the ATP’s Top 150. He’s now the country’s No. 3 male player. Brazil’s Gustavo Heide, another player of the same age, also impressed this past week.

Having featured predominantly on the Challenger level, Heide reached his first ATP quarterfinal in Gstaad from qualifying and stands on the cusp of entering the Top 150 (currently 155th).
