Rybakina Embraces Wimbledon Favorite Status With Convincing Win Over Svitolina

Elena Rybakina continued her amazing 2024 Wimbledon Championships run with another solid win over Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

The Kazakhstani player faced Svitolina a few weeks ago at Roland Garros and easily bested her in two sets. The same thing happened at SW19, as she again confirmed her favorite status at the event.

After Aryna Sabalenka withdrew from the tournament, Iga Swiatek lost a few days ago, and Coco Gauff was eliminated just shortly after, Rybakina officially became the number one favorite to win the grass-court major.

Not only is she playing really great this week, but she’s also generally a very good player on grass. She’s also a former champion, having won this event in 2022 by beating Ons Jabeur in the final.

She’s now two matches away from doing it again after beating Svitolina in a simple match overall. The former champion opened the match by dropping her serve, but she could break back immediately.

Slower starts are not uncommon for her because she’s a streaky player who plays very aggressive tennis, and sometimes, she simply needs time to settle.

Once she settles, the match can be over for her opponents quickly, and that was the case in this quarter-final clash as well. As the match progressed, Rybakina looked better and better and easily captured the first set 6-3.

Rybakina Embraces Wimbledon Favorite Status With Convincing Win Over Svitolina

It came because she was the far more dominant player on the court, with 15 winners compared to only four from her opponent. World No. 4 continued dominating in the second set as well because she immediately took an early 2-0 lead.

Svitolina simply didn’t have the power to really stand up to Rybakina, so her hope was to try to force her to miss. It happened at times, but it was not nearly enough for her to win the match.

The Kazakhstani had an easy time cruising to the finish line, winning the match 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, awaiting the winner of the match between Jelena Ostapenko and Barbora Krejcikova.
