Roger Federer and Serena Williams know how to thrill audiences in New York City in the summertime, but this week, the two retired greats traded racquets for the red carpet as they hit the Big Apple to promote their respective upcoming documentaries, “Federer: Twelve Final Days” and “In the Arena: Serena Williams,” with screenings at the iconic Tribeca Film Festival.

Federer’s flick, which documents his final career tournament at the 2022 Laver Cup, screened Monday at the SVA Theater in Chelsea, and it will premiere next week on Amazon Prime, while Williams’ Thursday screening came nearly a month before the first episode of her eight-part miniseries drops on ESPN+.

Clad in a slick navy suit, black dress shoes, and sunglasses, 20-time major champ Federer told reporters on the red carpet that he “only cried six times” when he viewed the completed documentary, which inititally began as a home movie. In addition to candid content with Federer and his wife, Mirka Federer, the documenatry features new interviews with Federer’s biggest rivals, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal.

“An athlete’s journey is emotional, as we know, but I think also seeing the beautiful friendships we create, the bonds, and then through the rivalry, it’s unbreakable … I think that’s the beauty of this film as well,” he said.
