Raducanu Withdraws From Mixed Doubles With Murray Ending His Wimbledon Career

Andy Murray wanted to end his Wimbledon career on the tennis court, but he won’t get a chance to do that because of Emma Raducanu’s withdrawal.

The British legend wasn’t able to compete in singles this year. Instead, he paired up with his brother Jamie for the first time in Wimbledon, recently completing his last men’s doubles match at the event.

After that, however, Murray was still supposed to play mixed doubles with Raducanu, but that won’t happen, as the 2021 US Open champion withdrew from the mixed doubles tournament, a few hours before their match was supposed to be played.

On Friday afternoon, Raducanu defeated Maria Sakkari to reach the second week of the singles competition at Wimbledon, and on Saturday evening, she was scheduled to play the mixed doubles match with Murray on No. 1 Court against Marcelo Arevalo and Shuai Zhang.

After teaming up with the 37-year-old for the tournament, Raducanu called it ‘a dream’ and she was really happy about getting a chance to play with the two-time Olympic gold medalist.

“It’s a dream of mine since I was a young girl, since watching the Olympics. Andy’s a hero to all of us. So for me, it’s a real gift and it’s a real honour that he asked me and it’s a moment that I could never say no to.”

“And I’m just super excited to be on the mixed doubles court and hopefully learn a thing or two about coming to the net or something.”

However, the match won’t take place, as Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles event because of ‘stiffness in her right wrist’.

“Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight. I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but got to take care.”
