The result was definitely disappointing, considering that Putintseva was coming into the contest on a high after beating world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the third round with a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
On the other hand, the win put Ostapenko into her third Wimbledon quarterfinal and the first since 2018. In 2017, she lost in the last four to the former world number one America’s Venus Williams with a score of 6-3, 7-5. A year later, in 2018, she overcame the hurdle in the last-eight stage as she defeated Serbia’s Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-4. However, her journey ended in the semifinal as she lost to former world number one Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
