Gauff Beats Djokovic, Alcaraz And Swiatek To Win 2024 ESPY Award

Coco Gauff was nominated for two of the 2024 ESPY Awards and won one, beating out fellow tennis players.

The 20-year-old American was nominated in two categories at last night’s ESPY Awards, which were hosted by tennis legend Serena Williams, and Gauff won in one of the categories.

The 2023 US Open winner was nominated for the Best Athlete in Women’s Sports award, which went to Las Vegas Aces basketball player A’ja Wilson. In addition to Wilson and Gauff, the nominees in that category were Caitlin Clark and Nelly Korda.

Gauff Beats Djokovic, Alcaraz And Swiatek To Win 2024 ESPY Award

Gauff certainly had a case for it after a breakout season in which she won her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the US Open. Despite not winning in the Best Athlete category, the American player won the award for Best Tennis Player, beating out Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Iga Swiatek, who were fellow nominees for the Best Tennis Player category.

All three had a strong case for it, especially Djokovic, who won three of the four Grand Slams last year. However, ultimately, it was Gauff who won the honor.

The American was surprised by the win and reacted on the social media platform X, thanking everybody who voted for her.

“Apparently, I won an ESPY. Thank you. I am super grateful! I wish I could’ve attended! Thank you to every one who voted.”

She woke up to the news after the award ceremony was held late at night in the time zone where the 20-year-old is currently located. Gauff is currently still in Europe after concluding her Wimbledon participation.

The American is preparing for the upcoming Paris Olympics, hoping to win a medal for her country. She recently admitted that she wants a gold medal, and she’ll have a decent shot at getting one. She will compete in singles and doubles with Jessica Pegula at the end of this month.
