Carlos Alcaraz’s win against Novak Djokovic ended yet another memorable Wimbledon edition in 2024. The Spaniard successfully defended his title at SW19 while the women’s edition saw a new single’s champion in Barbora Krecikova. The two weeks at the All England Lawn Tennis Club were filled with action, drama and a lot of controversy.

In the quest for glory, many tennis stars went a little overboard with emotions during their matches. Not only the players, but the commentators came into the limelight too due to their perceived lack of insight during some matches.

#1 Coco Gauff argues with her coaching team

Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon drought continued as the American was knocked out in the fourth round at SW19 once again. The 20-year-old has failed to live up to her high standards on the grass courts but with all the women’s top seeds faltering, Gauff was the favourite to win the title. However, her Wimbledon dream was ended by fellow American Emma Navarro in the fourth round.

During her loss to Navarro, Gauff looked agitated and constantly screamed at her box for more support. The American felt that her coaching team were not helping her enough as she looked to find answers to Navarro’s onslaught.

“Tell me something. You guys aren’t saying anything,” Gauff said to her team

In the post-match conference, Gauff admitted that she demanded more support from her box and felt like their game plan was not working. The American ended up losing the match in straight sets.

#2 Judy Murray takes a dig at Emma Raducanu on social media

Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu were scheduled to play mixed doubles together at the Wimbledon. Murray had already announced that this is potentially his farewell tournament as the Brit is set to retire at the end of the season. Andy lost in the doubles match with his brother Jamie Murray and all eyes were on his mixed doubles match with Raducanu, which could have been his last ever appearance at Wimbledon.

However, a day before the match, Raducanu pulled out of the mixed doubles citing a wrist injury as she reached the fourth round of singles. Raducanu’s decision faced criticism and Andy Murray’s mother, Judy took aim at Raducanu on Twitter.

Judy retweeted a post about Raducanu’s withdrawal and captioned it, “Astonishing,” sounding sarcastic and letting her displeasure known. Raducanu was eventually knocked out of singles but stood by her decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles.

#3 Chris Evert and John McEnroe face scrutiny for commentary during women’s final

The tennis fans were left disappointed with the insight – or lack of it – offered by commentators during the Wimbledon Ladies Singles final.

Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krecikova were both first-time finalists at Wimbledon and put on a show for the fans that lasted just under three hours. However, the commentary team of Christ Evert and John McEnroe were criticised for their commentary during the match.

Chris Evert got Jasmine Paolini’s name wrong during the match, which angered the tennis fans. Evert has been commentating for a long time and such a ‘rookie’ kind of mistake from the former World No. 1 was deemed unacceptable by the fans.

Similarly, John McEnroe was targeted for lack of insights during the match. The American has had a turbulent time with the fans since he started commentating for ESPN.

#4 Daniil Medvedev argues with the chair umpire but escapes default

Daniil Medvedev was involved in yet another angry outburst during his semifinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz. During the first set, Medvedev while chasing a drop shot stretched to reach a ball, but the chair umpire adjudged that the ball had bounced twice before the Russian returned it.

Medvedev was not pleased with this decision and uttered, “Fu** you,” while screaming towards the chair-umpire. The umpire, in turn not pleased with Medvedev’s address, consulted higher supervisors to discuss the matter. However, the officials eventually decided to allow Medvedev to continue the match and gave him a warning instead of a default.

#5 Andrey Rublev hits himself with the racquet

Andrey Rublev is famous for his outbursts on the court and the Russian was seen agitated again during his first-round defeat to Francisco Comesana. During the fourth set, Rublev lost his cool and started smashing his racquet against his knee and onto his head.

When asked about his emotional reaction, the Russian said that he wanted to vent his frustration and hit himself as the players are not allowed to smash the racquet on the grass.

“I would not do it if I was able to hit the racquet on the floor because we’re not allowed to hit them with the grass,” Rublev said

Rublev was involved in a similar incident at Roland Garros this year and was also defaulted at the Dubai Duty-Free Championships after using abusive language while addressing the umpire. At Wimbledon 2024, where he escaped such a default, the Russian ultimately lost the match in four sets.
