Venus Williams Forced To Withdraw From Atlanta Open Sunday Showdown

Venus Williams was supposed to return to tennis at the 2024 Atlanta Open as part of the Sunday Showdown, but she won’t be playing at the event due to another injury setback.

Williams has been away from tennis for a while. Her last competitive match was at the Miami Open, where she played and lost against Diana Shanider. The American has since been working hard to get back into shape so that she can play tennis, and it was supposed to happen at the ATP tournament in Atlanta soon.

She agreed to an exhibition match against Sloane Stephens back in May, which was to take place during the Atlanta Open. Unfortunately, fans won’t get to see that match because Williams experienced an injury setback, which will prevent her from playing in the Sunday Showdown.

It was supposed to take place on July 21st, but the Sunday Showdown will still go on with a replacement for the legendary American, as Sloane Stephens will take on Taylor Townsend. The event posted an update by Williams, who regretfully explained why she couldn’t play.

Venus Williams Forced To Withdraw From Atlanta Open Sunday Showdown

“Regret to inform you that I will not be able to participate in this final installment of the Sunday Showdown during the Atlanta Open. During one of my practice sessions, I unfortunately aggravated my abdomen, which will require rest and treatment.”

The injury setback will require her to rest up and recover. Fans will be hoping to see her back on the tennis courts soon, especially as the US Open approaches, as missing her home Grand Slam would be devastating for the veteran.

“I have enjoyed being able to play in Atlanta over the years and sincerely do hope to have the opportunity to return soon. I am nevertheless saddened that I will not be able to participate in this final edition of the Atlanta Open Sunday Showdown.”
