Novak Djokovic’s name was booed during Lorenzo Musetti’s on-court interview following the Italian’s Wimbledon 2024 quarterfinal win over Taylor Fritz on Wednesday, July 10. The boos seemingly stemmed from Djokovic mocking the crowd after his fourth-round victory against Holger Rune, with the 24-time Major winner accusing them of disrespecting him. Fans were left divided over the boos that rang out for the Serb during Musetti’s interview.
On Monday, July 8, following his emphatic straight-sets win over Rune, Djokovic controversially took a swipe at a section of the crowd for disrespecting him. The Serb proceeded to mockingly wish them “good night”.
The moment quickly went viral, and iconic figures from the tennis world also had their say on it. For instance, John McEnroe stood by the World No. 2, urging fans to be more respectful of him.
Two days later, Lorenzo Musetti defeated Fritz Taylor 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal. After clinching the five-set marathon, the 22-year-old stayed back for the customary on-court interview.
At one point during the interview, Musetti was asked about his thoughts on facing seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. This is when some fans in the crowd started booing.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) voiced their opinion on the latest instance of booing directed at Djokovic during Musetti’s interview. Some opined that the Serb cannot expect to be loved and respected after how he mocked the crowd following his win over Rune.
“I mean if Djokovic is going to antagonize the crowd, he shouldn’t expect love and/or respect in return. Tennis fans have had decades to decide how they feel about Djokovic. If they like him, their choice. If they don’t, their choice,” a fan wrote.
“Djokovic brings it upon himself. I’ll never have any sympathy for him. And he’ll never be a beloved champion like Federer and Nadal,” commented another fan.
“Good. He’s made an enemy of the crowd. What do people expect?” asked one fan.
However, another set of fans questioned if Djokovic was at all booed during Musetti’s interview.
“This…didn’t happen? There was a big “oooooooh” of excitement when it was announced he’d play Djokovic. Can NOBODY discern “boo” from “Rune” and “oooh” anymore?!” a fan asked.
“I watched that interview and nobody booed,” opined another fan.
“Mooooooo-setti,” yet another fan chimed in humorously, putting a spin on Rune’s admission that the crowd was mispronouncing his name and not booing Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic walked out of an interview after incessantly being asked about Wimbledon 2024 booing controversy
In the aftermath of Djokovic’s controversial jibe at the Wimbledon crowd, the Serb sat down for an interview with the BBC. However, the interview came to an abrupt halt as the World No. 2 was left frustrated by repeated questions on the booing controversy. The first two times he was asked about it, he stayed calm and gave his answers, but the third time around, he fired back at the interviewer, asking:
“Do you have any other questions other than the crowd, or you focused only on that or any questions about the match or something like that, or is it solely focused on that?”
The Serb proceeded to get up and leave, clearly annoyed with the questions posed to him.
Djokovic and Musetti will lock horns for the seventh time and for the first time on grass, with the Serb winning five out of their six prior meetings. The Serb beat the Italian in their two previous encounters in 2024.
Whoever out of the two wins, will take on either third seed Carlos Alcaraz or fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, July 14.
