Gauff Forgets Last Year’s Disappointment And Starts Wimbledon With Impressive Win

Coco Gauff started her 2024 Wimbledon Championships with a thrashing win over compatriot Caroline Dolehide in two simple sets.

The American once again had to face a compatriot in the first round of Wimbledon, but she did far better this time around. Last year, she faced Sofia Kenin, who beat her in two sets for a major upset. Gauff would later admit that the loss was one of the lowest points of her career, but she bounced back in spectacular fashion to win the US Open some weeks later.

This year, Gauff entered Wimbledon as the number two player on the WTA Tour, thanks to some consistent form in recent months. She specifically played like that in this first match, as she literally thrashed Doledhide in two sets.

Dolehide is not a bad player and can certainly play at a really high level, but in this match, she was no match against Gauff, who was brilliant. The first set took only 30 minutes, as Gauff won it 6-1 behind a very aggressive display that was paced by 9 winners.

Dolehide had only 2 winners but 9 unforced errors, which certainly sped things up. The second set lasted 5 minutes longer, and it was the world no. 2, who dominated once more. She didn’t play as sharp as she did in the previous set, having a negative winner-unforced error ratio compared to the opening set.

The good thing, though, was that Gauff created enough pressure on Dolehide so that she, too, made a lot of mistakes. She totalled 13 unforced errors in the second set, bowing out in 65 minutes of play. The final score was 6-1, 6-2 for Gauff, who hopes to have a good run. If she plays like this, she certainly should feel confident.
