In search of form, Barbora Krejcikova makes cheeky ‘bakery’ joke at her own expense

No bagels or breadsticks, but a blueberry cobbler.

After beginning 2024 inside the WTA’s Top 10 thanks to a resurgent back half of 2023 that saw her win both singles and doubles in San Diego, Krejcikova’s season so far has largely been marred by injuries and illness.

After a quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open, a back injury forced her out of Doha and Dubai, when she was the defending champion, as well as Indian Wells and Miami. At the same time she was recovering, she picked up what she described as a severe flu that left her barely able to get out of bed. Complications from illness led to her withdrawal from both Charleston and Rome.

The defending finalist in Birmingham, Krejcikova is entered there and in Eastbourne ahead of Wimbledon. But the ex-world No. 2 isn’t the only Czech hoping for a spark on British soil. Hoping to make her 2024 debut, also in Eastbourne, is Karolina Muchova, who hasn’t played since the US Open last summer. Last year’s Roland Garros finalist had wrist surgery in Feburary, and was back practicing last month.

Over the weekend, the two Billie Jean King Cup teammates reunited for a training session in Prague.
